Monmouth ‘Hybrid’ Gyms Offer Indoor And Outdoor Options

MONMOUTH COUNTY – Gym owner Stu Rosenstein likens his gym’s reopening to a wedding day.

“It was a mix of all these emotions,” said Rosenstein, owner of OVOX Gym & Training in Morganville. “It’s been an enormous amount of work. It’s like if you plan for your wedding day, and your wedding day comes, you’re excited, you’re nervous – you’re everything.”

After nearly six months under lockdown amid the coronavirus pandemic, New Jersey gyms were finally given the green light from the governor to reopen starting Sept. 1. Rosenstein told Patch that he feels “over prepared” after months of planning a pandemic makeover for his indoor gym, which now includes everything from plexiglass dividers between equipment to UV lighting in the facility’s HVAC system.

The FHSAA will finally decide its fall sports plan. A look at all options on the table

The Florida High School Athletic Association’s Board of Directors is finally set to vote — this time for real — on the association’s plan for playing fall sports this year amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Board of Directors is slated to meet in person at 10 a.m. on Friday in Gainesville to finalize a plan for all fall sports, including football. There are three options currently on the table, with potential regular-season start dates ranging from early September to November.

As it currently stands, the FHSAA will allow schools to begin practicing for fall sports on Aug. 24 and let the regular seasons begin two weeks later in September. One of the options — “Option 1” — mostly keeps this plan intact, while actually moving up the start of the regular season a few days. The other two — “Option 3A” and “Option 3B” — call for the FHSAA to

Medford Expands Online Transaction Options

MEDFORD, MA — The city announced this month it is moving its purchasing and bid processes online to increase efficiency, create a more user-friendly interface and update some of the city’s operating systems.

Earlier this year, the Building Department launched an online permitting platform that has streamlined the permitting process for applicants, decreases walk-in traffic and wait times and creates greater efficiencies for both staff and customers.

As of Monday, July 27, the online platform for bid opportunities is available at www.medfordma.org. The city joined BidNet’s Massachusetts Purchasing Group this month and will utilize the system to streamline their purchasing process, including bid management, bid distribution, electronic bid submissions and vendor relations.

BidNet’s Massachusetts Purchasing Group connects participating agencies from across the state to a large vendor pool and streamlines the bid and vendor management process. BidNet’s purchasing group provides notifications to registered vendors of new relevant solicitations, as well

Lost your health insurance in the pandemic? These are your options

Since coronavirus lockdowns began in early March, record numbers of Americans have been laid off or furloughed from their jobs.

In April, the unemployment rate soared to 14.7% — the highest it’s been since the Great Depression — and this summer, more than a million new applications for unemployment benefits are still being filed each week.

To make matters worse, many who have lost their jobs also have lost their employee health benefits amid the largest global health crisis in modern times.

That happened to an estimated 5.4 million U.S. workers between February and May, according to a study by the advocacy group Families USA. That’s far more than the 3.9 million who became uninsured during a full year of the financial crisis in 2008 and 2009.

If you’ve just lost your employee health insurance, you may be tempted to put off getting a new policy, especially if you’re in

Methacton Offering Students On Premise And Online Options

EAGLEVILLE, PA — Methacton School District tentatively plans to have an in-person schooling option this fall, part of a dual option plan which also offers families and students the choice of taking classes online.

The announcement comes as Montgomery County officials recently issued their countywide school reopening guidelines, which require masks and discourage large gatherings, field trips and extracurricular activities.

Methacton’s reopening plan includes an Aug. 31 start date. All students and staff must wear a face covering in schools, unless they are seated at desks that are six feet apart. This, however, will not always be possible.

“While some health organizations recommend 6’ distance for grades K -12, it may not be practical for students 100% of the school day,” the district notes in their plan.

Otherwise, face coverings can only be removed outdoors when social distancing is possible, while eating and drinking in a socially distanced manner, and

The advertisements started popping up on social media almost immediately after Los Angeles Unified School District said campuses would remain closed for the start of the school year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We’re looking for a TA/College student to help with LAUSD’s virtual learning for the new school year. Parents are WFH. Kids are 5th, 3rd and potentially K. We’re starting a learning pod with another family. Any TA’s on the westside … looking for work?”

“ISO: Teacher/Tutor for 2nd grader and a little Kinder if possible. Would be open to hosting a very small pod in our back yard.”

Central Bucks Amends Fall Options, Will Offer Hybrid Or Online

DOYLESTOWN, PA — The Central Bucks School District has adjusted its plans for the fall school year, and now will offer two options for learning: hybrid or online only.

Superintendent John J. Kopicki said Friday families will be asked to choose their preferred option for the start of the 2020-21 school year, which will begin on Aug. 31.

The district had initially intended to offer a full in-person learning option, but new guidelines from the state Department of Education released Thursday will prevent that plan from being feasible, officials said.

“While our planning teams were working to finalize plans to offer families a traditional option that would have students in school five days per week, revised recommendations and procedures were released from the governor and the Pennsylvania Department of Education,” Kopicki said.

“As a result, it became clear to our leadership that given the space limitations within our 23 schools,

Wondering What Kind of Face Mask to Buy? These Are the Most Effective Options, Study Finds

Scientific research has proven that masks are one of the most effective tools in stopping the spread of the new coronavirus, COVID-19. The highly contagious virus can easily infect other people through respiratory droplets from coughs, sneezes or even just talking, if people are standing close together — and especially if they’re indoors.

While a tightly fitted respirator mask is best for protecting a person and anyone around them from spreading COVID-19, a nationwide shortage of those masks means they should be reserved for frontline workers. That leaves the average person with a few options for non-medical face masks. Which ones are most effective?

A group of researchers at Florida Atlantic University’s College of Engineering and Computer Science set out to answer that question, and found that sewn, multi-layered masks — like the ones readily available on Etsy and from many clothing brands — were most effective, followed by cone-style
